in june-july 2007 lloyd joined an american film crew
as they visited sierra leone as
part of the finah misa kule
project, documenting the performances of the finah — the poets
and praise singers — of the kuranko language.
finah misa kule is a project of the new york-based people’s poetry
gathering (sponsored by city lore and the bowery poetry club)
and the endangered languages initiative.
lloyd was there to research, write and learn.
he managed all three, travelling from the capital, freetown,
to makeni and then the northern province villages of
kabala, bendugu, dankawali and yiffin.
he also presented a range of books generously donated by parthian
to the village elders at dankawali, whose library and school
had been destroyed in the civil war.
